The story of the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden begins not with a grand business plan—but with a moment of awe.
In 1977, Dan Lutkenhouse Sr. was vacationing on the Big Island of Hawai’i when he stumbled upon the breathtaking Onomea Valley. At the time, Dan was preparing to sell his long-established trucking business in California and retire. He and his wife, Pauline, were searching for a place where they could spend the rest of their lives—a place that felt untouched, timeless, and alive.
Then he found it.
Hidden along the lush Hamakua Coast, Onomea Valley was wild, mysterious, and overwhelmingly beautiful. Waterfalls cascaded through dense jungle. Towering tropical trees stretched toward the sky. The air was thick with the scent of rain and earth. But it was also nearly impenetrable—overgrown, tangled, and choked with invasive species, weeds, and thorny thickets.
Where others may have seen an impossible jungle, Dan saw a legacy.
He and Pauline purchased the 17-acre parcel for its seclusion and raw beauty. But once Dan began exploring the land more deeply, a powerful vision took hold: this valley deserved to be preserved—not just for them, but for the world.

This place was huge. I had to check my map. The best part about the Hawaii Botanical Garden is that it begins along a quiet road and gradually descends all the way down to the ocean. As you walk downhill, the air changes—it becomes cooler, fresher, filled with the scent of tropical flowers and salt from the Pacific.
The trails are beautifully maintained but still feel natural and adventurous. You pass through bamboo groves, cross small bridges over streams, and discover scenic overlooks where the coastline stretches endlessly in front of you. At certain points, you can hear waves crashing against the rocky shore long before you see them. When you get closer to the ocean, you’ll see trees open up, and there it is—the ocean, powerful and blue, meeting the lush green valley.
What impressed me most was how peaceful everything felt. Even with other visitors around, there’s a sense of calm that’s hard to describe. You’re not rushed. You’re not overwhelmed. You’re simply present. Informational signs along the path teach you about rare palms, heliconias, orchids, and other tropical species. It’s educational without feeling like a classroom.
The walk down is easy and scenic, but remember—you’ll be walking back up! Still, it’s worth every step. The combination of rainforest, waterfalls, garden design, and ocean views makes this place truly unique. It’s not just a stop on the map—it’s an unforgettable experience that captures the spirit of Hawaii itself.
